Neighborhood Scout is a website that uses community statistics to assist families in finding a safe neighborhood. Recently, it released a list of the 100 most dangerous cities in America using crime data from the FBI, U.S. Justice Department, and thousands of law enforcement agencies. Camden criminal lawyers report that six of the 100 cities are in New Jersey, with the City of Camden ranking at the top. Other notable New Jersey neighborhoods on the list include Atlantic City (8th), Bridgeton (25th), Trenton (27th), Newark (30th), and Paterson (60th).
According to the neighborhood search engine, there is a one in 39 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in Camden. The data also shows that in 2015, there were 1,895 violent crimes in the most dangerous city, which include murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The report indicates that violent crime is a result of single family homes and abandoned properties in low-income suburbs or cities. In the same study for the 2016 year, Neighborhood Scout reported that Camden fell to the second most dangerous city in America after East St. Louis, Illinois.
Reducing Violent Crime in the City of Camden
Unfortunately, Camden’s rate of 25.66 crimes per 1,000 people is six times higher than the national average of 3.8. The city and the Camden County Police Department are working together to make the streets safer by using ShotSpotter. This state-of-the-art audio technology allows the city to manage live feed of the streets, but more importantly it records the location of any gunfire that occurs. This helps police respond to crime scenes quickly and the results show that homicides dropped 42 percent and all violent crime fell by 21 percent.
